Pew Pew Pew

Well, that’s settled.  I wound up preordering DQ9 at GameStop after all, because it was near my ophthalmologist so we stopped by after my appointment.

The appointment where I got shot in the eyes with lasers.

When I was a little kid, there was a period when I was regularly getting blood tests to try to figure out…. well, it’s not really important but I had a lot of blood tests. They didn’t have the cool vacuum-tube thingies then, so blood was drawn with a big-ass syringe.  I’m sure it wasn’t really that painful but when you’re four years old any kind of needle is a big deal, let alone a large one. After my visit with the phlebotomist, my parents would bribe me with a trip to the record store and they would buy me a new record. That took the edge off of the experience.

So today, many years later, I went to an appointment where my ophthalmologist shot me in the eyes (with lasers) to cauterize around two holes in my retinas, to keep them from getting any larger. I tried my best not to complain, but there’s no getting around that it hurt quite a bit.

Afterwards, we went to the game store and bought a new video game. Some old tricks are still good tricks.

Immersed in Hearst.

My sweetie and I and her family visited Hearst Castle today. First time I’ve been. Much of it was very nice and impressive, but very large portions just seemed… tacky?

Anyway, here are some pics.

Acheesement Unlocked

Computer and videogaming aren’t holding my attention too much lately. Instead, I’ve been playing “the cooking game”. This is where I get a bunch of foodstuffs together and make a mess of my kitchen trying to make something I maybe read about once, and try to guess where I went wrong or whether it even tastes anything like it’s supposed to.

I’m not going to write up a full achievement list, but I’m pretty I’ve earned 10G for cooking something that doesn’t suck, and 20G for cooking something my girlfriend likes. It’s a good time, and even if it doesn’t taste great, at least I’ve made something for lunch or snacks.

Pickles!

Asazuke

  1. Hack up some cucumber
  2. … and some carrot
  3. Put ‘em in a zipper bag and weigh it
  4. Math time! Figure out 2% of that weight, and put that much salt in the bag.
  5. Mix it up.
  6. Add some lemon juice.
  7. Squish the air out of the bag and seal it. This will put more veggie surface area next to the lemon juice.
  8. Put it in the fridge for a couple of hours

Because it’s very quick, you’re just brining the veggies and they keep most of their fresh flavor. They don’t keep as long as “proper” pickles, just a couple of days, but sheesh, the effort is negligible and they’re tasty and low-fat. Not so much with the low-sodium though, so uh, if you eat it and have a heart attack it’s not my fault.

Variants allegedly include using rice vinegar as the acid, and adding ginger or chiles to the mix, though I haven’t tried any of those yet.
