Well, that’s settled. I wound up preordering DQ9 at GameStop after all, because it was near my ophthalmologist so we stopped by after my appointment.
The appointment where I got shot in the eyes with lasers.
When I was a little kid, there was a period when I was regularly getting blood tests to try to figure out…. well, it’s not really important but I had a lot of blood tests. They didn’t have the cool vacuum-tube thingies then, so blood was drawn with a big-ass syringe. I’m sure it wasn’t really that painful but when you’re four years old any kind of needle is a big deal, let alone a large one. After my visit with the phlebotomist, my parents would bribe me with a trip to the record store and they would buy me a new record. That took the edge off of the experience.
So today, many years later, I went to an appointment where my ophthalmologist shot me in the eyes (with lasers) to cauterize around two holes in my retinas, to keep them from getting any larger. I tried my best not to complain, but there’s no getting around that it hurt quite a bit.
Afterwards, we went to the game store and bought a new video game. Some old tricks are still good tricks.

Dragon Quest IX comes out…. this Sunday. My girlfriend and I will be getting copies for multiplayer goodness, but the date is baffling. A Sunday release means that preordering online won’t get it to me until the following week, so I may as well buy it locally, but do I know for sure anyone around here will have it on the 11th? GameStop, probably, but they kinda suck and I don’t like the “Did you PREORDER?” game they play when you try to buy a new release. Hm.

You got an iPhone? You like taking random photos? Check out the Hipstamatic app: It’s basically just a set of built-in photoshop filters, but it makes your snapshots look like they’re taken with an old instant camera. You can also get some neat results by taking Hipstamatic pics off of your screen to ancient-ify your existing photos.
Anyway, I’ve been having fun with it.

Suki (photo by Amy)
The other week, I got to play the cooperative board game Pandemic. I had fun, and it got me thinking about another cooperative board game, Arkham Horror.
I did the research, and while it’s a heavy game, I figured that because it’s cooperative I could probably get some players (Hi Amy!) to play a couple of times. Hell, I’ve spent as much on various video/computer games that I barely played. So I read through the rulebook, and not having anything planned for this evening, decided I’d try to sit down and play a solo game so I could get a feel for the rules.
In addition to the complexity and the length of the game, it turns out that Arkham Horror is big. That is, even if I cleared off my table (an unlikely event anyway), it would be a pretty tight fit. I decided to play on the floor.
You see where this is going, right? Me being on the floor is apparently the most exciting thing that’s happened to my cat Suki all day. I get Suki sitting on the train station, Suki moving all the skill counters, and of course Suki chewing on the plastic bag with the monsters in it.
I got two turns in before I packed it up. I did figure out how to set up the gameboard and the basic turn-flow though, but sheesh. Next time I’m definitely clearing the table off.
